More on the founder/developer gap

May 28, 2010

We’ve been covering the last couple of weeks the interesting gap between the overall employment picture in Southern California, and that of early stage startups and high tech companies — where demand seems to be outstripping supply of talent. Frank Peters, of the Frank Peters Show, has a great segment on his podcast talking with [...]

Mahalo’s Calacanis Set To Commit Facebook Seppeku Today

May 21, 2010

Jason Calacanis, the outspoken CEO of Santa Monica-based Mahalo, is set to delete his Facebook page today, because he “no longer trust(s) Facebook or Mark Zuckerberg” with his information, and because “Facebook has become a waste of time” in his life. Calacanis–who either is considered one of the great entrepreneurial minds of Southern California or [...]

Earlier this month I posted on a few Rules for Personal Networking for Newbies, talking about a few tips for people just getting into used to networking with others. This morning,  Mark Suster at GRP Partners (who is on a roll with his startup advice) posted The Right Way to Cancel a Meeting, talking about [...]

Good news for developers (and jobs)

May 14, 2010

A quick Friday bit: we’ve been talking with a lot (and I mean a LOT) of people who are looking for developers in Southern California (Los Angeles and beyond). One recruiter tells me it’s “like 1999″ in terms of the activity, with not only jobs aplenty, but offers and counter-offers hitting good talent. Interestingly enough, [...]

Strike one for e-commerce: Google to pull Nexus One off web store

May 14, 2010

Interesting Friday news: Google has decided to pull its Nexus One phone from its web store, and instead focus on retail distribution. It looks like the old-fashioned “try before you buy” still applies for some products, at least for new cell phones and new automobiles.

Five Misconceptions Of New Entrepreneurs

May 13, 2010

Here’s five quick misconceptions I see of new entrepeneurs who I have been running into at technology conferences, which I thought I’d share to hopefully help some of those folks out there avoid lengthy (and often fatal) issues with finding funding for their ventures. Investors fund business plans, all 100 pages. Ummm. There’s still a [...]

Billionaire Intel investor dies in LA

May 6, 2010

In what (to me) is a fascinating story, Intel investor, and LA billionaire Max Palevsky died yesterday in Beverly Hills. Amazing and fascinating, because of his story (he sold his first firm, SDS, to Xerox in 1969 for $920M, and bankrolled Intel as an angel/venture investor along with Arthur Rock, of Venrock Associates) — and the fact that [...]
