Good advice on Pitching VCs, press, etc.
Mark Suster has a good piece on why you shouldn’t pitch a VC with how much PR you’ve received lately. I’d add, the same goes for editors and writers, who really don’t care how much coverage you’ve received from other publications, but how interesting your company/products are to their own readers. I think this is particularly true of very early stage startups, who sometimes suddenly decide that attention from the press (rather than progress on a company) is a measure of their progress. I’d stress, in particular, that if you haven’t yet launched a product or even produced a prototype, you’re barking up the wrong tree, and really ought to be developing your product before going on an all out quest for media coverage. (I’m often amazed how often I get complaints from an entrepreneur about “not covering my company when XYZ publication has” and they haven’t even got a single customer or funding yet…).
