More on angel groups and pitching fees

October 13th, 2009 by Benjamin Kuo

It looks like the effort by Jason Calacanis to “out” angel groups which charge entrepreneurs to pitch is finally gaining some steam and attention. However, there’s been some debate over whether or not groups can or should charge fees, and if they are ever appropriate. Jason’s crusade–which started with the Keiretsu Forum–now has expanded to include two other local investment pitching groups, the Maverick Angels (run by John Dilts), and The Tech Supper Club, run by the iHollywood folks. The issue is not new to Southern California (in fact, Frank Peters talked with John Dilts in depth about the Maverick Angels’ philosophy in a recent podcast)–but it seems like Jason’s efforts are surfacing lots of the debate on this issue.

Scott Edward Walker — a local attorney in town who has contributed a few articles to our Insights and Opinions section — has now challenged John Dilts of the Maverick Angels and Jason Calacanis to a live debate over the issue. Scott outlines the main points between the two and says they should have a live, face-to-face debate over the issue.  What do you think?
