SoCal through Silicon Valley Eyes
I usually avoid covering the (hundreds) of awards and recognition people hand out to companies, because there are simply too many. However, AlwaysOn — which is running their conference, AlwaysOn Hollywood in a couple of weeks — just announced their list of their top 100 private companies in the digital entertainment area, and I thought it would be worthwhile to note the Southern California firms they have put on the list this year. (Disclaimer: we’re also working with AlwaysOn to help promote the event, as we did last year — incidentally, our subscribers can get a 50% discount off tickets to the event).
Anyway, the interesting thing about these lists is to see what kinds of companies merits the attention of folks from Silicon Valley. The list this year includes: Buzznet (Los Angeles), Eyespot (Encinitas), ibeatyou (Los Angeles), JibJab (Santa Monica), The MEN7 Network (Los Angeles), PluggedIn (Santa Monica), Edgecast (Los Angeles), GameFly (Los Angeles), Jacked (Los Angeles), PureVideo Networks (Los Angeles), SaysMe (Los Angeles), 60Frames (Beverly Hills), Areae (San Diego), Channel M (Los Angeles), Generate (Santa Monica), FunnyOrDie (Los Angeles), QD3 Entertainment (Studio City), RipeTV (Los Angeles), Link3 (Irvine), MaMoCa (San Clemente), Next.tv (Los Angeles), Spot Runner (Los Angeles), Transpera (Santa Monica), Access 360 (Venice), and GoTV Networks (Sherman Oaks). That’s 25 out of the 100 companies, which isn’t bad considering that in past years there would only be a fraction of that represented. That’s either a reflection of the rise of Southern California companies — particularly in the digital entertainment space — or in a concerted effort by the AlwaysOn folks to screen through the companies here for up and coming firms.
