R&D Spending
December 3rd, 2007 by Benjamin KuoThere’s an interesting article in the latest IEEE Spectrum, talking about R&D spending globally, and which companies make the biggest investments in R&D. Looking at the chart, it’s fascinating to see how the R&D spending of Toyota (top on the list, with $7.4 billion — yes, billion — in investments) dwarfs the amount of money placed into venture capital here in the entire region over a year.
Interestingly enough, Google — which is often cited as one of the most innovative companies — ranks only #79 on the list. Microsoft is #5 — with $7.1B in R&D spending.
Looking through the list, Southern California’s Amgen is number 30 ($3.3B); Qualcom is #66 ($1.5B), and Broadcom ranks at #89, with a little over $1.1B in R&D spending.
